SIG P238

The SIG Sauer P238 is a compact single-action pistol manufactured by the German company, SIG Sauer. It is designed around the Colt Mustang whilst retaining the signature scalloped slide and finger relief under the trigger guard expected from SIG Sauer. It’s unique selling points are the grip panels, which are made from  fluted polymer. This makes this an all-metal gun, in comparison to the Ruger LCP and the Kel-Tec P-3AT, it’s main competitors, which are both plastic framed pistols. Most variants have an ambidextrous thumb safety, as well as standard night sights. The P238 has a stainless steel slide and an aluminium frame.

KEEP THIS IN MIND

When choosing a holster for your SIG Sauer P238, there are some important aspects you need to consider, such as the gun’s size, weight and functionality.

Weapon Size and Weight

The SIG Sauer P238 has the following measurements:

Length 5.5 in (140 mm)

Barrel length    2.7 in (69 mm)

Width   1.1 in (28 mm)

Height  3.9 in (99 mm)

Weight 15.2 oz (430 g)

As you can see from the above details, the SIG Sauer P238 would fall into the small to medium size category of guns. Because of it’s small size, a user can choose from a full range of holsters; from pocket holsters, ankle holster, over the waistband (OWB) holsters, inside the waistband (IWB) holsters, and shoulder holsters.

Weapon use:

The SIG P238 is manufactured for law enforcement agencies, but has also become popular with the general public. Concealment is high on the agenda for most civilians, so a holster that helps to conceal your pistol is imperative. Since these pistols are quite small, concealment is easy and can be accomplished with most types of holsters. Ankle holsters are particularly popular for small guns. Keep in mind though; speed of draw is hampered as you need to bend down to get your pistol. When it comes to ease of draw, opt for pocket holsters, OWB holsters and IWB holsters.

This pocket SIG P238 holster is made from a viscous black cloth, which Desantis say is like fly paper, and will stick to the lining of your pockets. In contrast, the inside lining of this SIG P238 holster is made from a slick material, This means draw is smooth and fast. This holster also has foam inside it to break up the outline of the gun, and make it easier to conceal. It is a good fit for the Sig P238, Main concerns are that the foam is not enough to conceal your pistol. Many users have said that the imprint of the pistol is visible through pockets, with some users stating it actually makes it even more obvious, Also, some users have found that the outer viscous lining is not as ‘sticky’ as the manufacturers claim and, when drawing the pistol, the pocket holster becomes dislodged from the pocket.

This is an IWB SIG P238 holster made from soft, unmolded leather. Concealing the Sig P238 is very easy with this holster, as it is designed to reduce bulk. It also features a heavy duty steel spring clip which is positioned high to give deep cover. It fits the Sig P238 snugly, and most users feel that, even when wearing just a t-shirt, the SIG P238 holster and the gun just disappear. The only slight issue seems to be that, due to the holster’s design, it does not cover the whole gun. The hammer may dig into your midsection.

This is an IWB SIG P238 holster made specifically for the Sig P238 and, as such, fit is perfect. This is a hybrid SIG P238 holster made from Kydex, a thermoplastic material, and high density leather. Many users have praised the craftsmanship, with durable Kevlar stitching, beveled edges, and the ability to adjust carry height and cant, for customised comfort. The sweat guard cut allows the user to have full shooting grip when the gun is holstered, which increases speed of draw. Users can also adjust the retention, so you can get the right amount of grip the holster has on the gun. This means no issues with the gun falling out unexpectedly, or being so tight that a user finds it difficult to draw smoothly. It also features ‘comfort curve'; Kydex is placed at the back of the SIG P238 holster, and curves against the user’s body, creating a very individual, snug fit. It enables the user to bring the grip closer to their body, whilst also making this holster very comfortable to wear and easy to conceal. It’s hard to find much wrong with this SIG P238.

This inexpensive, OWB SIG P238 holster is made from strong, denier nylon, and comes with a pouch to hold an extra magazine on the front of the holster. For the price, it’s quite well made, with edges turned under to stop fraying, and a reinforced inside channel to create a smooth draw. It’s a good fit for the Sig P238. It can be worn on a belt using the steel clip, or by using the web loops (on belts up to 2 inches wide). Concerns are that the pouch for the extra magazine is a little too small to hold a full magazine, as well as issues with durability. But for the price, this SIG P238 holster is not bad. This holster is a little difficult to conceal, with it being an OWB holster.

Small pistols, such as the Sig P238, are ideal for ankle holsters, and this SIG P238 holster is made from 600 denier nylon with a neoprane brace. It sets itself apart from other ankle holsters, which tend to made from elastic materials that can stretch over time. The manufacturers state that this ankle holster will not stretch, retaining it’s shape and give you a secure fit for years to come. Users report a very comfortable wear, with some forgetting that they had it on. A few users have mentioned that the edge of the velcro has scratched their legs a little, but generally, this is a comfortable SIG P238 holster. Draw is smooth, but you need to take into consideration whether you need a fast draw, as bending down to unholster your gun does add a few seconds.

OUR TOP SIG P238 HOLSTER CHOICE

There are really some great Sig P238 holster options available today. So which Sig P238 holster would we choose if we were looking for a holster to fit a Sig P238? Lets recap the top options available:

The DeSantis Nemesis Sig P238 pocket holster is an inexpensive and comfortable holster, and a great fit for the Sig P238 as it was designed for this pistol. It is made from black cloth and, due to its silky inner lining, draw from the holster is very smooth. However, there are issues with the outer, viscous lining, and the worry that the holster is drawn out of the pocket along with the pistol.

The DeSantis LCP/P3AT/DB Insider holster is another inexpensive holster made from soft leather, which is fantastic at concealing the Sig P238 pistol. Many users claim to forget they are wearing it. However, some have mentioned that the hammer can dig into the skin where it is exposed due to the holster’s design. Draw is smooth and fast, once you allow for the break in period required for all leather holsters, and this holster is a good fit for the Sig P238.

The Sig Sauer P238 IWB Hybrid holster is our most expensive holster on the list, and is made from a mixture of premium leather and Kydex. It is able to conceal your weapon very well and and is unsurpassed when it comes to comfort. Fit is perfect, as you would expect from a holster designed specifically for a certain make and model of gun, and draw is also smooth, once you break in this holster. The only criticism, if you can call it that, is that some people may not want to pay this price; it is nearly three times as expensive as the next two most expensive holsters on this list (the Desantis Inside holster, and the Outbags Nylon Neoprene Ankle holster).

The Outbags Ankle holster is made from nylon and neoprane and is a good fit for the Sg P238. Most users find this holster very comfortable, with only a few users stating the velcro causes some scratching to their ankles when worn for extended periods. Draw is smooth, but the fact that it is worn on the ankle needs to be taken into consideration if you require fast draw.

So which one would we choose?

You get what you pay for, so for unparalleled comfort, concealment, fit and draw, the winning SIG P238 holster has to be the Sig Sauer P238 IWB Hybrid holster. It was difficult to find anything wrong with it!

However, for those on a budget, we were very impressed with the DeSantis Insider holster, our second-placed SIG P238 holster. We were pleased with how easy it is to conceal a Sig P238, as well as comfort and craftsmanship. For those worried about the hammer of the Sig P238 rubbing on skin, ensuring that it doesn’t sit on bare skin would eliminate this problem.
