COMPARISON TABLE OF SIG P226 HOLSTER OPTIONS
The SIG P226 is a full sized pistol manufactured by German company SIG Sauer. The P226 and it’s many variants are used in service by a number of military institutions and law enforcement organisations all over the world.
The standard P226 is both single and double action. It incorporates a decocking lever just above the magazine release button on the left hand side. This allows the hammer to be dropped safely. On firing, the slide automatically cocks the hammer. The hammer can not be decocked without actuating the firing pin block which makes this pistol very safe; it is virtually impossible to fire the gun accidentally by using the decocking lever. Additionally, unless the trigger is pulled, the decocking lever ensures the firing pin is blocked from striking a loaded round, therefore making the pistol ‘drop safe’. However, accidental discharge can happen when pulling the trigger and lowering the hammer with sufficient force. Nonetheless, when this pistol is properly decocked, it can be placed in a holster safely and you can fire in double action mode by pulling the trigger. At any time, the user can manually cock the hammer to shoot in single action mode. The Sig P226 has no manual safety.

KEEP THIS IN MIND
When choosing a holster for your SIG P226, keep in mind that all guns differ when it comes to size, weight and functionality. These are some important aspects you need to consider.
Weapon Size and Weight
The SIG P226 has the following measurements:
Length: 7.7 in (196 mm)
Barrel Length: 4.4 in (112 mm)
Width:1.50 in (38.1 mm)
Height: 5.5 in (140 mm)
Weight: 34 oz (964 g)
You can see from the above that the SIG P226 would fall into the medium to large size category of guns. This relegates pocket and ankle holster, as it would be incredibly difficult to conceal. The best holsters for these weapons would be regular over the waistband (OWB) holsters, inside the waistband (IWB) holsters, or shoulder holsters.
The SIG P226 is in world-wide use in numerous law enforcement and military organizations. It is also a popular gun for civilians concerned with self-defence. IWB and OWB holsters would be your ideal choice for holsters, when carrying this gun for self-defence use. For concealed carry, which tends to be the preferred type of carry for civilians, your best bet would be the IWB holsters, which can provide a secure and comfortable carry, whilst not being on show to the public. Shoulder holsters can also give a good degree of concealment, however it does involve you using a jacket or coat to conceal. This may not be practical in warmer seasons, or in countries where it is always warm.
OUR REVIEW OF 5 SIG P226 HOLSTER OPTIONS
Below we look at 5 SIG P226 holster options that are available on Amazon. We look at the materials that the holsters are made from, the comfort of how it is worn, how it fits the SIG P226 and how easy it is to draw your weapon from the holster.
Galco Concealable Belt Holster for Sig-Sauer P226, P220
This SIG P226 holster is highly concealable compared to the standard pancake type holsters. It is made from a unique two piece construction. The side nearest to the body is contoured to fit the natural curve of the hip, with all the molding on the other side of the holster, which makes the holster significantly more narrow and more comfortable to wear. One user said that it was the only holster he could wear comfortably whilst driving. Also, this SIG P226 holster has a strong forward cant which means that it will leave a minimal print when worn under a shirt. However, some users have mentioned that it does ride a little low for many garments to cover. It boasts a hand molded exterior which gives excellent retention. It also has a combat grip accessibility for speed, covered trigger guard for safety and double-stitched seams for durability. Constructed from premium saddle leather, this SIG P226 holster is available in both left and right hand designs, and in black or Havana brown colours. Can fit belts up to one and half inches. This is an ideal holster for carrying outside the waist band. As with most leather holsters, it takes a little time for the holster to ‘give’ and make be a little stiff and ‘squeaky’ at first. Galco recommend you use Draw-EZ solution which will help break in all leather holsters.
BlackHawk CQC Carbon Fiber Holster Matte Finish SIG 220 / 226
This SIG P226 holster is famous for it’s active retention system. It does away with thumb breaks which can make re-holstering difficult and slows down your draw. Instead, it has a SERPA Technology lock which, when you holster the weapon, automatically engages the trigger guard and will hang onto it until you release it. You release it by simply using your normal drawing motion and using the trigger finger to push the mechanism beside the body of the holster as you draw. Your trigger finger should naturally fall on the lock release mechanism. However, some users have reported that the thumb push off area is a little on the small side and you need to wiggle the gun to release it from the holster, just like a new leather holster, and that the holster actually follows the gun upwards as you draw. Also, it is a little bulky, so may not ideal for concealed carry. It comes with both the paddle platform and belt loop, and there are swivel buckles on the belt loop, which allow articulation for maximum flexibility. A few users have noted that, with the belt loops, it is difficult to attach and remove a duty belt. All in all, a good, solid SIG P226 holster.
DeSantis Pro Stealth Large Frame Auto Black
This SIG P226 holster is made from premium ballistic nylon and is ambidextrous. It also has a powder coated black spring clip (for left handers, it can be removed and inserted on the opposite side) which will hold this holster securely on your belt. It comes with an extra magazine clip. This SIG P226 holster is an inside the pants holster. Some users have mentioned that this holster does sit a little low on the waist band, making it difficult to conceal with some garments. A good upgrade would be a version that sits just a little higher which would give you a better draw grip. Some users have also said that it had a rather long break in period with the P226 pistol. One user said it took over a month for him to be able to pull out his P226 without pulling the entire holster out. The star is the black spring clip, which many users say is solid and holds the holster very securely on the belt, even if it may be a little stiff when swapping the clip from side to side.
Galco Fletch High Ride Belt Holster for Sig-Sauer P226, P220
Almost identical to the Galco Concealable Belt Holster above, this SIG P226 holster is different only in that it is a high ride belt holster. Available in tan or black premium leather that Galco is famous for, it can be very stiff in the beginning and your pistol will feel tight when inserting and drawing. One user recommends that you draw you weapon a few dozen times a day until you get a smooth draw. Also, you may want to break the holster in by drawing when sat down as well as when stood up; even if you’ve managed to get your draw smooth when stood up, you may find your pistol still sticks when drawing sat down. But like all high quality leather goods, it only gets better with age. The effort is well worth it as you are training the holster to fit to the exact form of your gun. You may also want to try the Galco recommended Draw-EZ solution to further break in your holster. The holster is ideal for belts up to 1 and 3/4 inch belts. Because of the higher ride, this holster is more concealable and comfortable, with only a long vest or shirt needed to cover. Also, this SIG P226 holster has good retention, even without the thumb break.
Galco Vertical Shoulder Holster System for Sig-Sauer P226, P220
This SIG P226 holster is a traditional vertical shoulder holster from Galco, which has been field tested over military uniform as well as hunting clothing. This is ideal for anyone who prefers the classic vertical carry style (vertical position is ideal for concealed carry as nothing sticks out). This system has many fans who claim it gives the perfect fit due to it’s spider harness. All four points of the harness are connected by the clover-shaped swivel back plate and can pivot independently of each other. Add to that the swivel connectors, and this holster system can fit virtually any body size comfortably. Many users have used cheaper nylon holsters and would now never use anything but Galco’s premium leather. The full system comprises of SIG P226 holster, harness, ammo carrier and a set of system screws. It is ambidextrous and available in tan or black finish. As with all premium leather goods, there is a break in period required before you can holster and draw smoothly.
OUR TOP SIG P226 HOLSTER CHOICE
There are really some great SIG P226 holster options available today. So which SIG P226 holster would we choose if we were looking for a holster to fit a SIG P226? Lets recap the top options available:
The Galco Concealable Belt holster made from saddle leather and is a perfect fit for the SIG P226. As with all leather holsters, there is a ‘break in’ period needed to get the gun to draw smoothly and quickly, and Galco even have a recommended solution to help with the process. Regarding comfort of carry, this SIG P226 holster is unbeatable, with the only slight concern being that it rides a little low, so concealment may be a little difficult.
The BlackHawk holster is made from carbon fiber and also a good fit for the SIG P226. Although comfortable to wear, because of the SERPA technology lock, many users find that the holster is drawn up when wanting to remove the gun. Also, this lock means that users need to ‘wiggle’ the gun to release it from the holster, not ideal for a quick and smooth draw.
The DeSantis Pro Stealth holster is made from premium ballistic nylon and another good fit for the SIG P226. It sits rather low, so can be difficult to conceal, but is comfortable when worn. The main drawback with this SIG P226 holster option is the long break-in period when it comes to the holster releasing the gun smoothly. It may be a while before you achieve a smooth and fast draw.
The Galco Fletch High Ride Belt holster is almost identical to the Galco Concealable Belt Holster with the only difference being that it ‘rides high’. This makes it more concealable than the first Galco holster on this list.
The Galco Vertical Shoulder Holster System is a premium leather shoulder holster. It is a perfect fit for the SIG P226. Because it carries the gun vertically, it is fantastic for concealed carry, although, of course a jacket or coat is needed. When it come comes to comfort, this SIG P226 holster option is unbeatable due to it’s design. And draw is also fast and smooth, so long as you factor in the break-in period required for all leather holsters.
So which SIG P226 holster option would we choose?
It’s easy to see why we would pick a Galco holster here! Three out of the top five SIG P226 holster options are made by Galco. The beautiful, premium leather, the perfect fit for the SIG P226, and how comfortable these holsters are to wear, have made them a favourite for everyone. Take your pick from the Galco holsters depending on what kind of carry you prefer. The SIG-P226 is a rather large gun, so complete concealment is difficult. If you desire concealed carry, then the Galco Vertical Shoulder Holster System, with it’s vertical carry, ensures your gun remains hidden. The pay off here is that you will need to conceal the whole system using a jacket. The Galco Concealable Belt holster is ideal for those who prefer a holster that rides a little low. And the Galco Fletch High Ride Belt holster, as the name suggests, is perfect for those who likes holsters that ride high. Just remember to factor in the break-in period required for these holsters, as the leather does need to ‘give’ a little before your gun can be drawn smoothly.
