The Kel-Tec PF-9 is a 9 mm caliber, recoil operated, locked breech, double action only, semi-automatic pistol based on (and sharing many parts with) Kel-Tec’s earlier P-11 and P-3AT models. Kel-Tec claims the PF-9 is the flattest and lightest 9 mm pistol ever mass-produced. It was designed as a concealment and backup weapon for law enforcement and for civilian concealed carry.
KEEP THIS IN MIND
When choosing a Kel-Tec PF9 holster, there are a few key considerations you need to keep in mind in order to choose the right holster. Firearms can be different when it comes to functionality, weight and size.
Weapon Size and Weight:
The Kel-Tec PF9 has the following measurements:
Length: 5.85 in (14.9 cm)
Barrel Length: 3.1 in (7.9 cm)
Width: 0.88 in (2.2 cm)
Height: 4.3 in (11 cm)
Weight: 12.7 oz (360 g)
From the above dimensions, you can see that the Kel-Tec PF9 can be classed as a small to medium sized pistol. This makes it more suited to concealed carry than some of the larger handguns out there. It also makes it suited for most types of holster, but ideal if you want to go the routes of shoulder holsters or inside the waistband (IWB) holsters.
OUR REVIEW OF 5 Kel-Tec PF9 HOLSTER OPTIONS
Below we look at 5 Kel-Tec PF9 holster options that are available on Amazon. We look at the materials that the holsters are made from, the comfort of how it is worn, how it fits the Kel-Tec PF9, and how easy it is to draw your weapon from the holster.
Here are our top 5 Kel-Tec PF9 holster options:
DeSantis Kahr/Taurus/Keltec Sof-Tuck Holster
First on our list is the Soft-Tuck holster from DeSantis. It is made from soft suede leather with the top of the holster being reinforced with saddle leather to help make reholstering easy and smooth. The holster is available in both right-hand and left-hand configurations.
Designed as a IWB/Tuck holster with a low print profile and tight body ride, it is the ideal holster if you have concealed carry in mind. The soft suede leather will not irritate your skin or chafe your clothes like holster made from harsher materials would. Of course the suede leather will absorb moisture a lot more, so if you tend to sweat a lot or be in wet conditions, the holster might not last very well. This also means keeping it clean will be more challenging, however if you wear it under your clothes most of the time it should not get too dirty anyway.
The adjustable cant makes carrying this holster very comfortable as you can adjust the cant to your preferred position. The clip of the holster is nice and tight so that the holster will stay in place without flopping all over the place.
One thing that would worry us is the is the lack of a retention strap/mechanism to keep the gun in place so that it does not slip out of the holster. If you carry it IWB, then it should not be too much of a problem.
Overall this is a well made holster that comes in at a very affordable price. It is very comfortable to wear (especially for extended carry) and provides for good concealed carry. At the price that it retails for, it provides really good value for money.
Barsony Brown Leather Pancake Holster
This pancake holster is made in the US by Barsony Holsters & Belts and comes in right-hand as well as left-hand options. Being made from quality leather and precision stitching, this holster will last you a really long time if you look after it! Unlike most leather holsters, this PF9 holster option’s leather is so supple that you will not need to break it much in to get a good fit for your weapon. At approximately 4 ounces, it is pretty light…especially for a leather holster.
The holster sits high and tight to the body, allowing for good concealed carry. With a loose shirt over your weapon, it will not likely get noticed by passers-by. You cannot adjust the cant of the holster though and is designed to be worn at a slight forward cant (some people like to refer to this as the “FBI style”. While this cant is not ideal for quick draws, it does make for a comfortable carry and good concealment. It also does not have a clip, so you cannot clip it to your pants for IWB carry. Rather, this holster is designed to be worn on the belt. Your weapon is kept securely in place by the buttoned clasp.
Federal Holsterworks Hip Holster
If you are looking for a straightforward work-horse type holster, then this Nylon holster from Federal Holsterworks could be the right Kel-Tec PF9 holster option for you. It is reasonably affordable and is made from sturdy Nylon, so you don’t have to feel bad if it gets dirty or a little worn.
It is designed to be pretty flexible in a number of ways. Firstly, you can adjust it to be either left-handed or right-handed. It can also be worn either on a belt or be clipped to the inside of your pants. For extra sturdiness during carry, it is recommended that you attach it to your belt and clip it to the inside of your pants. It has a thumb-break that keeps your weapon in place when holstered. The thumb-break is positioned across the hammer instead of the grip for a natural feel and a positive draw. An extra magazine pouch mounted on the front channel of the holster is standard.
We really like that it has multi-layer nylon cushion fit, which is designed to mould itself to the shape of the gun. It also means your weapon won’t get scuffed each time you holster your weapon.
If you want a top quality self-defence carry type of holster that you can wear for extended periods, there are probably better Kel-Tec PF9 holster options out there that will suit your needs. However, if you want an inexpensive holster that you can store your weapon in or take to the range, this is a really good option for you as it won’t break the bank and will get the job done.
OUTBAGS LOB3S-PF9 Black Genuine Leather IWB Conceal Carry Gun Holster
Another leather holster on our list of Kel-Tec PF9 holster options, this holster is hand crafted in the USA. The leather is cured and hardened to make sure the holster keeps its shape. This makes it easy to reholster your weapon (as the holster won’t collapse in on itself). It also has a protective clear coating to keep your holster looking good and clean.
This holster is specifically designed to be IWB, so if you are looking to carry concealed, this holster is a good Kel-Tec PF9 holster for your needs. If you want a holster for OWB carry, then this is not the holster for you.
This is a really nice quality holster for a good price (at the time of this article being written, it was selling for less than the DeSantis and Barsony leather holsters on our list). The only criticism we have for the holster is that its clip tends to be really stiff, which results in it being really difficult to get the holster loose from your pants when you want to take the holster off. This can be a bit awkward if you are in public and need to quickly remove your holster for whatever reason. It can of course be remedied with a bit of DIY if you really want to.
The holster is available in left-hand and right-hand options.
DeSantis N38 The Nemesis Pocket Holster
As the Kel-Tec PF9 is meant to be a concealed carry type of weapon, it makes sense that some folks will want to have a pocket holster for the PF9. DeSantis makes this pocket holster that is made from a viscous Nylon, which makes it very sticky (the manufacturer compares it to being sticky like fly paper). This stickiness is of course to make sure that the holster does not move around in your pocket. The inside of the holster is made from a slick pack cloth for a low friction draw. The holster is padded to ensure a low gun print.
Due to the shape of this holster, it is ambidextrous. So you do not need to buy a holster that is specifically right-handed or left-handed.
OUR TOP PF9 HOLSTER CHOICE
There are really some great Kel-Tec PF9 holster options available today. So which Kel-Tec PF9 holster would we choose if we were looking for a holster to fit a Kel-Tec PF9? Lets recap the top options available:
The DeSantis holster is made from quality materials and it provides for comfortable carry. Being made from suede will make it a bit more difficult to keep clean and will be prone to absorbing moisture. At a very affordable price, you will get a good holster that will give you carrying pleasure that you can adjust to suite your carry preferences.
The Barsony holster is a bit more expensive than the DeSantis (but only a little), but is also made from quality leather that gives it a really nice look. Quality on the holster is excellent and if looked after, this holster can last you a long time. The cant of the holster is not adjustable, so if you are not happy with a slightly forward cant this holster is perhaps not the right PF9 holster option for you. However if you want a good looking, affordable and quality holster to carry on your belt then this is a great option!
The Federal Holsterworks holster is an affordable work-horse type holster. It has a standard pouch for an extra magazine and can be adjusted to be worn on the belt or clipped to the inside of the pants (we recommend doing both). If you want an inexpensive straight-forward holster to take to the range or storing your weapon, this is the holster for you.
The Outbags leather holster is another good quality leather holster, but which is also the cheapest leather Kel-Tec PF 9 holster option on our list. It is specifically designed for IWB carry only, so if you want something that can also be carried OWB or SOB, then this holster will not satisfy your needs. However if you are looking for an IWB holster specifically, we strongly recommend this holster.
The DeSantis pocket holster is a simple little holster made from a viscous Nylon to make sure it stays put in your pocket. If you want to carry your PF9 in your pocket, then this is the Kel-Tec PF9 holster options that will fit your needs.
So which Kel-Tec PF9 holster would we choose?
If we had to fork over our hard earned money for a new holster that would fit the Kel-Tec PF9, what would we choose? Well there are some great PF9 holster choices out there. If we had to choose one that looks good, wears comfortably and is well made we would go with the Barsony pancake holster. Its leather is supple and will be easier to maintain than the suede leather DeSantis option. We also like the slight forward canting that if offers. However, if we were looking for an IWB holster specifically, the Outbags leather holster would win the race.
